It’s the simple things…

So many people aren’t happy in the relationships that they are currently in.. Most of what they are missing is the simple things. Not huge issues that are impossible to fix, but small things that can be corrected almost instantly. Why aren’t these things done? Is it stubbornness, hard-headedness? People are not willing to change even if it could change EVERYTHING for the better… Why is that? People claim that all they want in life is to be happy, but so many of us will not do what we need to do in order to gain that happiness… Wassup with that?

Salaam,

Well, I think this question may be being asked for the rest of the time that we are here on Earth... I think, honestly, that we base our relationships off of the wrong thing.

Love is beautiful when performed right but I think it is fleeting and something that people have for each other based on the most unstable things... She's sexy, he's successful, she understands me, we have great sex and so on...

Try basing your relationship(s) on faith first... A common walk with God(swt) can be the saving throw in many issues. Going to God and his word has saved me in many instances and I'll use it when I am married and I pray that she (my future wife) uses it with me.

Even happiness is the wrong goal, in my opinion... Happiness is just another word for gratification and gratification will not get you into the gates of Heaven (if you believe in such a place). If we seek to make others happy before ourselves, chances are we'll become happy.

I agree with some things you've said but not with all. "If we seek to make others happy before ourselves, chances are we'll become happy." I've tried that approach and to be honest, it hasn't worked for me. I've spent most of my time, it seems, making others happy while in the end it is me who goes without happiness. Is it fair? No, but such is life. There are times when the focus should be turned around on ourselves. We can't look to others for our own happiness, we have to make ourselves happy. Do you agree?

I know the conversation wasn't with me, but I agree that if we focus on a giving spirit what we yield is so much greater than when we are self serving. The problem is when you are giving with hopes of getting something in return - it has the appearance of being selfless, but is really selfish.

If the giving isn't from a place where the act is truly from the heart and has no desire for reciprocity, it will be resented and therefore end with a bad taste in your mouth. That is why, if it can't be done with the true spirit of giving, maybe it is best to pass on that one and wait for the next opportunity.
